The nearest airport to Gavalohori is Chania (Souda) which is about 45 minutes drive away and receives charter flights from the UK every Tuesday in the summer season.
Iraklion (or "Heraklion")airport is about 90 minutes drive away, and gets UK charters on a variety of days in season.
Either of these airports can also be reached from the UK every week of the year by travelling via Athens - which is neither as expensive nor as awkward as you might think.
You can travel to Athens via BA, EasyJet or Aegean Airways (direct from Heathrow) or on other carriers using European hubs, and then transfer to Crete using Olympic or Aegean Airways or even overnight on the ferry from Piraeus (outside Athens) to Souda.

Car hire is not essential to staying at the villa, as there is the pool in which to swim, and shops, bars and tavernas within easy walking distance, but there is no doubt that having the freedom that a car will give you will make your holiday more enjoyable.
